What Is the Maker Movement and Why Should You Care?
By B. Morin
Glossary Terms
DIY – Do-it-yourself
Quotes
“…we are all now flocking to do-it-yourself (DIY) websites and apps that will teach us the cooking, crafting and making skills that many of us missed out on in our youth and which now are so important as we built homes and start families.” (Morin, 2013, pg.1)
Interesting how the students who were not interested in taking many of the life skills course and dismissed them because they were electives, are now realizing the value of those courses and are now having to take it upon themselves to learn the stuff they need every day. The author even commented about knowing Spanish but needing to learn how to cook.
“…Maker Faire, the world’s biggest maker event that now takes place in many global cities each year.” (Morin, 2013, pg. 1)
The above quote shows that this movement is global and not isolated to North America. The quote following demonstrates that even retailers, whose business thrives on consumerism, are encouraging and assisting in this new economic and industrial movement.
“Free People, a popular clothing retailer for young women, often hosts craft nights inside the doors of its Anthropologie locations.” (Morin, 2013, pg. 1)
This final quote makes me think that educators need to get in front of this movement and use it to our advantage in order to better equip our students for the future, so that they may be able to navigate the new flow of information and technology brought on by this movement. Additionally, we need to use the momentum, excitement and learning structure generated by this movement to inspire our students to learn and create in new ways.
“…modern technology has made it easier than ever for a single individual to create and distribute items that are customizable and unique without having middlemen like manufacturers. This growing shift will continue to affect the economy and will likely have big implications on large retailers. It is a special time in history that will have a transformative impact on our future.” (Morin, 2013, pg. 1)
