STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (VanEgeren, 2013, pg. 22)
STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math (VanEgeren, 2013, pg. 22)
Quotes
“Outbursts of excitement follow; the girls are one step closer to accomplishing their task.” (VanEgeren, 2013, pg. 22)
These girls are learning how to accomplish valuable skills that may lead to future careers and they are enjoying learning. I felt that this article was a great example that students are able to learn through doing and they often enjoy themselves when doing so.
“…four-day-long collaboration between an empowerment program for middle-school girls” (VanEgeren, 2013, pg. 22)
I was intrigued by this statement because this implementation of the maker culture was used to empower young girls. Though I am not surprised myself that physically accomplishing something does bring forth strong emotions of self-confidence, it is good to see that other have made this connection and are working to use this knowledge.
“This philosophy is part of the maker culture that fuses technology and creativity.” (VanEgeren, 2013, pg. 22)
I liked this point because I am constantly looking for ways to increase and promote creativity. A great way to do this is to blend to things that often do not seem to go together. While fashion has been a leader in innovation since the industrial revolution, the development of etextiles is a new avenue that is ripe for the innovation and ideas of the “maker”.
Summary
This article reflects on the opportunity of middle-school girls to experience learning through doing, the premise of the ‘maker culture’ and the STEM movement.
