Dive into the Maker Movement
By Adam Provost
Quotes
“…in many places where multidisciplinary projects are beginning to tear down barriers between traditionally compartmentalized subjects.” (Provost, 2013)
The breaking down of these barriers are important, often when children are learning in schools they are unable to make connections to the classwork between disciplines. The maker labs offer the opportunity for cross-curricular connection to develop and scaffold each other. This is promising, especially for students who may have difficulty grasping theoretical concepts, the tangible application could be beneficial.
“The motion in the Lab also raises many questions about school scheduling.” (Provost, 2013)
This would likely be a great challenge. Where do we fit in another class, one that requires an extensive amount of time for success? Electives currently offered in schools can be overlooked due to scheduling issues. Do we extend the school year? Do we reduce requirements? How does this shape the future of education?
